House System

Chesterton Academy’s House System finds its inspiration in the 1,000 year-old tradition of Christian education exemplified in the colleges at Oxford and Cambridge. Houses create real, tangible communities within the larger school; giving students the opportunity to take ownership, exercise true leadership and grow in virtue. Team camaraderie within a house builds with the use of a competitive point system. This system creates friendly competition between houses while encouraging personal accountability. Students build leadership skills and make lifelong friends. Another benefit is that lower classmen identify and bond with upperclassmen upon acceptance into a house.

Teaching faculty are members of a specific house and serve as adult leadership role models. Familial bonds are also strengthened, because all immediate family members are admitted to the same house for the tenure of that family’s time at Stella Maris Chesterton Academy.

Student Activities & Events

Stella Maris Chesterton Academy has a firm commitment to encouraging the joys of active play and contemplation, in its students. The following are some ways in which students are supported in practicing their fully human capacity for glorying in the wonders of the world.

Activities

Year-round opportunities to train and compete in a variety of sports increases students' strength and fitness while instilling essential virtues. Physical movement is vital to interior and exterior health; and when properly and vigorously pursued, meshes seamlessly with the mission of Stella Maris Chesterton Academy.

At Stella Maris, life lessons are discovered through vigorous exercise and competition. Virtues such as teamwork, respect, and perseverance develop by exposure to sports.  Lessons are driven home that might otherwise remain abstract in the classroom.  Through an emphasis on sportsmanship, athletics serves students by providing another channel towards virtue and faith.

Athletics models the fortitude of the saints and martyrs who endured trials and tribulations on behalf of the Gospel.  We embrace Paul’s words (from 2 Timothy 4:7) that our adventure in this life is like a good bout, match, or race: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

Prayer is, as many saints have said, less easily done without than breathing. Much like sport allows us to practice abstracts in the concrete, prayer - in particular pilgrimage - allows us to practice the spiritual laws we profess.

Stella Maris Chesterton Academy looks forward to facilitating pilgrimages with its students to events such as World Youth Day and vitally important spiritual centers such as Guadalupe and Rome.
